For a start up team, the line between work and life is blurred. Your start-up is part of you and tightly woven into every part of your life. Just a few more emails before bed. If I push through the next 24 hours coding it will be done and then I'll get some sleep. Constant pitching at cocktail parties always looking for the next investor. Like watching the American Idol team last night and how tight they are, going through early stage start-up is a bonding experience like nothing else. For me, the hardest part about growth was when new people coming on board viewed their job as just a job, and not a part of their life. It was tough for me not to negatively judge people that didn't share the same passion and dedication to the cause that the start-up team had. Maybe that is just human. In the movie Miracle, the USA team sharply rejected the new player that came to camp late, because he hadn't experienced what the others had. I wonder how the American Idol contestants would respond to a newbie coming to the stage now. Probably not well.
