I used to be deathly afraid of eating before a run and during a run. That was until I read Ultra marathon man by Dean Karnezes. I was amazed when he ate a large pizza and cheese cake during one of his 100 plus mile runs. Over my last couple of runs I experimented with consuming calories before and during my long runs. In fact in my last marathon, I ate quite a bit when I felt as though I was low on energy and about to hit the wall. The food brought me back to life. I'm not going to ignore the folks handing out pretzels, bagels, etc ever again.
